Video chat with strangers in India: a practical guide
Why the site may not open your camera on an Indian Android phone, when the lobby is actually busy from IST, why multilingual users have an advantage here, and the sextortion script to recognise early.

Mulaqat means a meeting — a coming together, an encounter. The word exists in Urdu, Hindi and several neighbouring languages, and it is the right name for what a video chat with a stranger actually is: not a friendship, not a transaction, just a meeting that either goes somewhere or does not.
This is a practical guide for people using the platform from India, and for anyone who wants to talk to somebody here.
Getting connected on an Indian mobile network
Most people in India will open this on a phone over 4G or 5G, and that works. Two things are worth knowing before you decide the site is broken.
Open the link in a real browser. If you tapped a link inside WhatsApp, Instagram or Facebook, you are in that app's built-in browser, and many of them cannot reach the camera at all. Use the menu to open the page in Chrome. This is the single most common reason video chat appears not to work on an Indian Android phone, and it is not a network problem.
Some networks block direct connections. Video on Mulaqat travels directly between the two phones rather than through our servers, which is what makes it unrecordable and what keeps it free. On a few restrictive networks — some office and college Wi-Fi, occasionally a carrier-grade NAT — two devices cannot reach each other directly, and the call will not establish. When that happens we say so and offer you the next person rather than showing a black screen. Switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data usually resolves it.
Video is the bulk of the data used, so a long conversation on a metered pack is not free in that sense. On a limited plan, Wi-Fi is the better choice.
When India is actually busy
A random video chat platform is only as good as the number of people on it at the same moment, and that number moves with the clock. India spans one time zone at UTC plus five and a half hours, which puts the Indian evening in a useful position: it overlaps the European afternoon and the very start of the American morning, and it is the middle of the night in the United States.
In practice that means an Indian evening is a good time to meet Europe and the Gulf, and a poor time to meet North America. If you specifically want to talk to somebody in the United States, an Indian morning lands on their evening.
If a country search comes up empty, this is usually why, and the honest answer is not to keep waiting. Widening to Any country for one conversation and narrowing again afterwards costs nothing. The queue mechanics are explained in matchmaking without starvation.
Language, and why it is an advantage here
India is one of the largest English-speaking populations in the world, and a very large number of people here speak two or three languages fluently. That is unusually useful on a platform like this one.
It means you can hold a conversation with somebody in Europe, South America or South East Asia in English, and it also means you are exactly the person a learner elsewhere is hoping to meet. If you enjoy that, saying "I am happy to help you practise" in the first ten seconds tends to produce a much better conversation than waiting to be asked. Our guide to language practice works from both sides of that exchange.
When you are the one being understood with difficulty, the fixes are the same everywhere: shorter sentences, no idioms, and type the hard word into the text chat rather than repeating it louder.
Safety, with the local specifics
The universal rules apply here as anywhere — never share your full name, address, workplace, college or phone number, and assume anything on camera could be captured by the other person. Our full safety guide covers the patterns in detail.
Two things worth stating specifically for readers in India.
Sextortion is a well-documented and widely reported scam here. The script is consistent: a warm stranger, unusual friendliness, a push towards something intimate within minutes, then a demand for money backed by a threat to send a recording to your contacts. The clearest early signal is pressure to move the conversation to WhatsApp or Telegram, where there is no report button and no moderation record. If it happens, do not pay — paying identifies you as someone who pays and the demands continue. Block, report on the platform, keep screenshots, and report it at cybercrime.gov.in or on the 1930 helpline.
Nobody you meet by chance has an investment opportunity for you. The patient, friendly stranger who eventually mentions a trading platform or a group is running a script, and it is one of the most common financial frauds reported in India.
What the other person sees
Your camera, your display name or simply "Guest", your country, and any interests you both chose. That is the complete list. Not your email, not your IP address, not your city, and not your state or region unless you deliberately switch that on. India is a crowd of well over a billion people; a state is a considerably smaller one, which is why it is off by default.
Why the name
Most platforms in this category are named after the mechanism — roulette, random, chat. Mulaqat is named after the thing itself. A mulaqat is not a relationship and it is not nothing; it is a meeting between two people who did not previously know each other, which is exactly what happens when the video connects.
It is free, needs no account to start, is adults only, and nothing is recorded. If you have not used anything like it before, how Mulaqat works walks through it, and what to actually talk about with a stranger covers the part most people find hardest.
